Its time to draw a line under TTW, for now.

It seems that although there’s a lot of vague, generalised goodwill out there, very few people have the time or the inclination to actually do anything about it. Those of us who have been involved so far would now like to do other things… Doors seemed to open a crack, then close. It’s time for us to let it rest and move on.

If you would like to spark a Transition Town Wimborne back into life one day, please do!

We have some funds in cash – not much! About £65, which will go into the TransitionBH kitty, where the £150 from the Co-op has remained. We are sure they will hand it back to Wimborne if anyone ever resurrects TTW.

We will call a Green Drinks meeting in the early summer to discuss this and why TTW didn’t get anywhere; the Transition Network are interested in why some groups don’t get off the ground, so that other groups can learn from it. This may not be a comfortable process for us, but worthwhile as part of the bigger picture.

It just remains to say a big thank you to you all, and to everyone who has tried to start Wimborne on its transition to a post-carbon future!

In February, we’re trying something new. We had a few “themed evenings” last summer which were quite successful, before the CLaRC put the room rental up. So we’re planning a series of similar monthly evenings in the Town Hall (in West Street, close to the Tivoli) on Transition-related topics, where local people who are already practising the skills involved come & talk & demonstrate & let people have a go where practicable. The first two are booked; on Thursday February 10th at 7.30 in the Committee Room we’ll be looking at Keeping Backyard Poultry and on Thursday March 10th, same time same place, it’ll be Home Brewing. Small items of brewing equipment will be available for sale at this and I will bring along any demijohns left from last summer’s appeal. At both evenings we will also have a Seed Swap table, so bring along your spare seeds (both edible & ornamental) and swap away! We have lots of ideas for the future & would like to hear yours too…

It seems that most people are unable to come to the White Hart on a Tuesday, so for those who are free, it seems sensible to have a “Morsbagging” session here at my kitchen table, whlist we discuss the things that need to be discussed! For those who haven’t been able to get to meetings lately, we are going to give away Morsbags (strong fabric shopping bags made from reclaimed or recycled fabric) from the back of our little float in the Christmas parade. The more bags we have, the more people we can “reach” even if it just saves a few more plastic bags from going into circulation and thence into landfill – or the sea, to dupe marine life into eating them, because they look so much like jellyfish. Other Morsbags “pods” are sending us bags to distribute too; many, many thanks to “Beattie” “Sazziej” “Offcuts” “Krisaby” “Tintin” and “Hslc”, what a wonderful bunch they all are! But the more we have, the merrier…
Email me (angieAT4ormore.co.uk, replace the AT with @) for details of how to get here & I’ll haul another sewing machine out!

A quick update from last night’s meeting; we are going to aim to organise some kind of “energy event” early next Spring, provisionally called The Powerdown Day; much depends on securing a good venue but we hope to put on a comprehensive, informative & thought-provoking show. We’d also like to run a series of informal evenings on things we can do at a household or neighbourhood level, led by local people who are already doing them rather than by experts, including demonstrations & tastings. We have a stall booked at the Wimborne in Bloom Charity Fair on 13th November (volunteers welcomed!) and we’ll be taking part in the Save The Children Christmas Parade on 11th December with some kind of carbon-neutral transport; ideas & suggestions welcomed, the most appropriate & practical so far being a convoy of wheelbarrows! There are lots of other ideas on the back burner too, so please keep watching this space. Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 4th November in the White Hart from 7.30 to discuss ideas for the Parade. Hope to see you there!

The Re-Skilling/Rural Skills Day at the Priest’s House Museum went really well! Accompanied by the delicious scent of Dorset Shortbread wafting up from John’s endeavours in the museum kitchen, spinners span, weavers wove, knitting, patchwork & embroidery happened in front of peoples’ very eyes, Morsbaggers bagged in the forge and rustic furniture, beekeeping and basketmaking all happened in the garden. The visitors were thrilled, the museum were very happy and the crafters tired but triumphant. All agreed we’d like to do it all over again next year and there may even be a mini-reprise with just the indoor crafts before Christmas. A big pat on the back to all involved!

Next Green Drinks session is this coming Thursday, 7th October, in the White Hart from 7.30. This week’s theme – What Next for TTW?! How do we follow up after the Foraging Walk and the Re-Skilling Day? What else needs doing around Wimborne that isn’t already being done? All ideas & input welcomed…
