About this site

The transition to a low energy future is inevitable. The supply of liquid fuel will soon decline, and averting the climate crisis is urgent.

A Transition Towns initiative is a local community preparing for these changes, working together to look peak oil and climate change squarely in the eye and address this big question:

Starting now, how can we sustain our local community and thrive during the next few decades?

Many aspects of life in Wimborne must significantly increase their resilience to the effects of peak oil. We must also drastically reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change.

We live the Wimborne area, and we are starting a Transition Towns initiatives here. We are not really an organisation though – more a bunch of people that are just getting on with things; simply a collection of acquainted individuals who help each other to get going. We meet about once a month for mutual support around our activities, to share resources and represent a united front to formal organisations.

What can you do?

  • Look up peak oil, permaculture and Transition Towns on the web.
  • Find out the time and place of our next event on our website, print out the map, and turn up with a friend.
  • Start chatting to the local organisations you are involved in (social clubs, work, chuch groups…) or simply the people living in your neighbourhood and find out what they feel they can do to transition to a low energy world.

The “Who we are and what we do” document (PDF) is published by the Transition Network, the parent organisation for the Transition Towns movement. This is a very short document that quickly explains the purpose and scope of Transition Towns.

Website History

This site was started in December 2008 to raise awareness about Transition in the Wimborne area. Then the Transition BH group was established during the first half of 2009. Following that, the first Transition Town Wimborne Open Meeting was held on July 9th 2009 and monthly meetings have continued since. To date we have screened documentaries about Peak Oil, Climate Change and Permaculture Gardening to raise awareness of the Transition concept, and hope to take more concrete action in the future as an active core team is formed.
